History and logic both answer emphatically, "Yes!" Some months ago, in an article in this publication titled The Rationale of the Automatic Rifle, I quoted some oral history from war veteran and career Navy man Bob Menard. I first met him at the NH State Championship of outdoor conventional pistol shooting back in the late Sixties. He won that event and held the title for several years. He had been Virginia State Champion prior to moving to the Granite State. Some years later, Robert Menard was the NRA Counselor who certified my wife and I as a firearms instructor through that organization. Bob had told us that he'd been aboard the USS Constellation -- he remembered the year as 1960 -- when he had been part of joint maneuvers conducted with what were by then called the Japanese Defense Forces. Over dinner and drinks, with Japanese and American naval officers talking shop, many of them WWII veterans, the question had come up, why didn't the Japanese invade what they must have recognized as the wide open West Coast of the United States at the beginning of that war? The officer had replied that his country was well aware that there was a high density of armed citizenry in America, even state championships for private citizens in the use of military rifles, and that the Japanese were not fools to set foot in such quicksand. Menard, even then a man committed to Second Amendment Rights, naturally kept a vivid memory of the conversation. The story has found its way onto the Internet. Now comes one "TSB," who holds forth on the Internet against Menard, with remarks like the following: "Darn, those wily Japs thought of everything. How can anyone read this crap without laughing? You know, whomever promulgated this BS obviously thought that making up this mythology would be helpful to the (Right to Keep and Bear Arms) cause, or on the flip side, wanted to make pro-gun folks look like ignoramuses. Sort of like that other cherished myth that the Swiss militia deterred both the Kaiser and later Hitler from attacking Switzerland. T'wasn't so." According to On Target, the journal of the North Central Florida Sportsman's Association, "TSB is the handle for 'The Shooting Bench' radio show host, Bill Walker." TSB's position is that the reason the Japanese did not invade was that it wasn't in their interest to do so, and that they lacked the physical wherewithal for such a massive undertaking. Furthermore, he says, the Constellation was in dry-dock for fire damage repair during 1960, implying that Menard therefore must have fabricated the whole thing. Interestingly, TSB expects us to take as a given his flat statements that an armed citizen militia had nothing to do with Switzerland's neutrality. I beg to differ. Politico-military recognition of the danger of invading or tyrannizing an armed populace is something long since documented in history. Does TSB forget the American Revolution? In his authoritative book Origins and Development of the Second Amendment, David T. Hardy, an attorney and expert on the history of law, quotes historian William Gordon. [1] "William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham, remained the colonist's defender in the House of Lords. Shortly after Concord, he urged attempts at peacemaking. 'The Congress of Philadelphia do not hold the language of slaves: they tell you what they mean. They do not ask you to repeal your laws as a favor: they claim it as a right; they demand it. They tell you they will not submit to them, and I tell you the (Coercive) Acts must be repealed; you cannot enforce them. My Lords, there are three millions of whigs. Three millions of whigs, my Lords, with arms in their hands, are a very formidable body. 'twas the whigs, my Lords, that set his Majesty's royal ancestors upon the throne of England.'" [2] Pitt's words fell on deaf ears. England stepped into the quicksand that soon became the Revolutionary War, and came to regret it. A precedent was set that would continue for centuries. From the Viet Cong to the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, it has been proven much more recently that peasants with guns and a cause they believed in can thwart the organized might of the world's greatest military superpowers. The Swiss militia and Switzerland's carefully crafted strategy of being able to seal off their country and make roads impassable by enemy armor in 24 hours had nothing to do with deterring Adolf Hitler from invading? I don't know how many times TSB has been to Switzerland. I've been there twice, spending much of my time in the company of Swiss military men. They are the ones who should know, and they were utterly convinced that it was the obvious hopelessness of invading a country in which every household was not only armed but skilled with state of the art military rifles that kept the Nazi wolf from Switzerland's door. A true picture of the powerful deterrent effect of the armed Swiss citizenry is seen in the works of Stephen Halbrook and others. The same principle works in microcosm. Does anyone believe that 12 million armed Jews, Gypsies, and homosexuals would have been herded into cattle cars by Nazis and shipped away for extermination? Closer to home, consider the recent comment by Professor John Lott, the controversial but incontrovertible gun law researcher. "Studies -- including a recent one by Rand -- show that in high-gun-ownership areas, criminals take more time casing a home before they break in, to make sure nobody is home. The reason they give is because they don't want to be shot." [3] "TSB" can, of course, believe what he wants. He can believe that the nightmarish prospect of house to house combat with a nation of citizen sharpshooters would not deter a warlord from sending his infantry there. He can believe that criminals aren't more afraid of good people who have guns than good people who don't. He can believe that the Earth is flat. But when he tries to promulgate such opinions, he loses credibility, and when he attacks the veracity of Commander Menard by calling his recollections "BS," he loses his own honor. TSB is legitimately concerned about gun owners losing face with spurious quotes, like the "firearms are liberty's teeth" line attributed to George Washington which no one could verify. Menard's account does not fall into that category. Oral history is an honored and respected tradition in this country. Bob Menard's recollection of that discussion with his Japanese counterpart so long ago is a classic example, and one that we can learn from. If TSB is right and the retired war veteran was off by a year or so on the date, it detracts not at all from the powerful message that conversation sends to those who today fight for critical rights that are in danger. Commander Menard deserves better. Finally, TSB also has the right to say that he knows more about Japanese war strategy sixty years ago than the Japanese naval officer who made that statement to Menard. I suspect, however, that the Japanese officer was a whole lot closer to the situation than TSB, and his opinion carries a great deal more weight. It is significant to note that in 1945, as the US invasion of Japan loomed, the Japanese government began a crash program of training its citizens to shoot back and if necessary, fight back with home-made lances. This speaks of a government that had long understood and respected the power of an armed citizenry, which is probably why from feudal times to WWII, Japan systematically and ruthlessly disarmed every nation it conquered. The deterrent effect of an armed citizenry against invaders and tyrants is inescapable to any graduate of History 101. It is confirmed by Logic 101. End of story. Sorry, TSB. Guido Knopp is the ZDF's (one of the largest TV networks in Germany) chief historians, and just received the humanitarian award from the German Jewish Congress. The documentary will be shown on the two largest networks and it portrays Reichs Kanzler Adolf Hitler as a crazed maniac, whose revenge for being turned down at the Vienna Art School as a student, is to steal Europe's most valued artworks and antique treasures. Throughout the documentary, the Fuehrer is referred to as a "dictator." Knopp's report alleges that the original painting of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was stolen by Adolf Hitler, and has still not been found. He alleges that the one that hangs in the Louvre today is a fake. However, it is true that the Louvre has denied experts to examine the painting, since the end of WWII. Of course, the documentary is, as usual, full of inaccuracies and lies. All Adolf Hitler wanted to do is preserve these treasures for the public to see. Let me digress. I believe strongly that antiquities and art are documents of people's heritage and culture and belong into a museum owned by the public. Hitler was trying to display all of this at the Fuehrer Museum that he was planning on building in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. The documentary continues to tell the fairytale that the Fuehrer had stored all these treasures in a salt mine in Salzburg, Austria. Guarded by 17 SS men. A special murder commando stormed the mine and killed all 17 guards. Ever since, most of these treasures have disappeared. However, they keep popping up as the private loot in Jewish households. The Jews have even been so bold to petition governments to return the people's art to them, which they claim to own. Adolf Hitler's idea of displaying all this art in a museum was the right one. Calling him a thief is right out ridiculous. The real robbers were the Allies. They are the ones that divided the "loot" amongst themselves. On top, of course, is the United States, which still hides Germany's artwork and treasures in the cellars of the Pentagon. In my trips to look for German artifacts and antiquities, I have seen outrageous things. Pictures of fallen German soldiers, not older than 16 or 17. Their medals, their personal belongings, all for sale for big money. These things have been stolen, obtained through blackmail and force. A lot of these things have been exchanged by desperate mothers to save their children’s lives. A can of beans, or soup was the price that these American soldiers paid for it. How do we know that? We know that from Victor Gollancz' book "In darkest Germany." After the war, mostly women and children had no food, no shelter, and no medical attention. Children were going through garbage cans to survive and entire families lived in bombed-out ruins. We just saw the same thing in Iraq. Again, the Americans looted and stole all the treasures. You can observe this same technique being applied to the history and heritage of the people of the United States today.] ----------------------------------------------------------------- Reader's Forum Dear Chinese Swaztika, Where I live in Northwest London, Kilburn High Rd, everyday you can walk down the road and see Chinese men and women selling DVD's out of their big rucksacks, they charge 5 pounds per DVD, the DVD's are popular because they sell the latest DVD's (Passion of Christ, Scoobydoo 2, etc.) they also go into shops and try to sell their films -- even hardcore porn!! On Saturday I went to the local carboot sale (flea market) and watched as the DVD selling Chinese sold (in the market!) between 100 to 200 DVD's in the few hours, that's a staggering 500 - 1000 pounds -- that's nearly $2000 USD!!! In one afternoon!!! These people are selling illegal DVD's and the police don't seem to be doing anything. Other people selling their stuff out of their carboots are making on average 60 - 150 per afternoon. On the high street, under most of the bus shelters you can see asylum seekers and middle eastern-sounding men, (romanians/albanians etc.) selling cigarettes illegally, the police know about them and don't do anything - they are always there! Back to the Chinese ... I like Chinese people and respect them, but these Chinese people are the ones taken from the bottom of the barrel, no scrupples, don't care as long as they make money. I suppose you can't blame them, $2000 USD in Chinese Yuan (RMB) they would have to work for maybe a year in China!!! They have landed a Goldmine in Europe!! In Sicily the last time I went over there in my home town there were 3 Chinese shops, all selling cheap clothes that they import from China, at least they aren't doing anything illegal I suppose. But I went to another town and went up to a Chinese guy selling electrical stuff, I said to him in Chinese "how much is this". He gave me a strange look, a sort of shock and answered me in Italian what the price was, he didn't like the idea maybe that I could say something in his language! But even in Wales, UK, in the countryside in a village you will find a Chinese takeaway -- they are everywhere!! The immigration situation in the UK is terrible, only last week a labour minister resigned, because of the ease in which Romanian illegal immigrants are getting into the country. Spain has now been attacked by apparently Islamic terrorism, the people who did this came from the Arabic neighbourhood, these people hide amongst the other immigrants. In London we have the same problem, how will the police be able to tell amongst us who will strap themselves with bombs and some biological/chemical cocktail and blow away a few hundred people? I was thinking of getting my digital camera and taking photos of the people under the bus shelters and the DVD gangs and ... and do what? Give them to the police? They know already, open up a website and shame these people and make others aware of the situation? I don't know ... it's as if people know what's going on and are just accepting it, but people don't realise that behind these criminals there are probably Chinese mafia and Romanian/Albanian mafia, Turkish mafia etc. WE ARE BEING SWAMPED by illegal immigrants and bogus asylum seekers, they come to the UK and seek benefits for which they or their families have never paid into, and one question is what do these people give to the country? DVD's? Cigarettes? They TAKE from the taxpayer from their welfare cheques and they get their accomodation paid by the taxpayer again! How have they enriched our country or culture as the stupid liberals keep telling us? I have met nice Romanians and Albanians and my best friend is Chinese ... but these are the more educated people, definately not the criminal types.
